Jim Faletti obituary (1933 – 2020) – Napa, CA
September 21, 1933 – February 25, 2020
Resident of Napa, California
James Vincent Faletti died on February 25, 2020 at Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa, California, from heart disease. He was 86 years old.
During his career in public school finance, Jim has helped San Jose, Milpitas, Berkeley, Stockton, and Southern California school districts lead the management of the education budget as Deputy Superintendent of Finance school companies for Milpitas USD, Berkeley USD and Stockton USD. He obtained an MBA from Pepperdine University.
At home Jim was a funny, quirky, empathetic, loving, often forgetful father and stepfather, a husband, life companion and caregiver, family member and friend who enjoyed hiking in the Sierra Nevada, Redwoods, Watersheds, Bird Watching, Trout Fishing, Beekeeping, Dogs, Kids, Chess, Blackjack, 49ers, Music, Whiskey and Italian Food from his parents’ native Piedmont region . Always curious, he sported a discreet (sometimes quirky) sense of humor.
Born September 21, 1933 in San Francisco, Jim (“Jimmy”) grew up in the historic Decoto and Niles districts of Fremont, with his mother, Rina Ferrante (Monteo da Po, Piedmont, Italy) and his stepfather, August Canziani (Asti, Italy); and biological father, Andrew Henry Faletti in Minden, Nevada and Zephyr Cove, Lake Tahoe.
Jimmy enjoyed running in the hills near Niles Canyon, playing marbles, planting gardens and pruning fruit trees in his parents’ backyard. The gatherings at the chalets at Zephyr Cove included the Faletti, Ferrante, Canziani, Ferrario, Tregaski and Quaresma families; many of those who immigrated from Italy in the 1910s are remembered on Ellis Island.
He attended Washington High School in Fremont (1952) and graduated from San Jose State College in Business Accounting and Geology (1956). He promised Sigma Chi and married Gamma Phi Beta Peggy Wooden (1935-2018, San Jose and Napa) in 1956. They spent two years of service in the US Army in Frankfurt, Germany. In San Jose, in a group of families and community-minded professionals in East San Jose, they raised four children, Rina Cathleen of Napa, Calif. (Mr. David Huang; granddaughter Xochi); Matthew James of Mill Creek, WA (Mr. Naomi; daughters Angelica and Patricia, Mr. Lorenzo); Alexander Paul (Mr. Lisa; grandchildren AJ, Mr. Sarah, Josh, Allie, Logan, DJ and Jaxon) of Herriman, UT; and Adam Mead, of Tuolumne, California.
A lifelong passion for the Sierra Nevada led him, along with his stepfather Earl Wooden, to found a Faletti-Wooden legacy of pioneering mountaineering, environmental preservation, forest stewardship and a enduring tradition of Tall Tale.
Retired Jim and his life partner Gerry Schwarzentraub (1942-2007) built a loving family life with Gerry’s children, Jana Brooks (m. Jeff; grandchildren Patricia and Daniel, m. Alex, great- granddaughter Hayes), Eric Schwarzentraub and Matt Schwarzentraub (m. Cecilia; grandson Akton), all of Stockton, CA.
He was an active parent in East San Jose Hilltop 4-H, SJSU Sigma Chi Fraternity, San Jose Elks Club, School of Italian Language and Culture in Stockton, and California Association for School Business Officials.
No obituary can describe who he was, the things we will miss and how he will live in our memories and hearts.
